Follow these steps to test your internet speed and gather useful data for troubleshooting connectivity, speed, or audio/video quality problems during Zoom calls.
Step 1: Choose a Speed Test Tool
- Visit Speedtest.net or use one of the following alternatives:
- Fast.com – A simple, ad-free test (owned by Netflix), ideal for streaming-related diagnostics.
- M-Lab Internet Speed Test – Open-source and user-friendly.
Step 2: Run the Speed Test
- Click the Go or Start button to begin the test.
- Wait for the test to complete (typically around 30 seconds). It will measure:
- Download Speed – How fast your device receives data from the internet.
- Upload Speed – How fast your device sends data to the internet.
- Ping (Latency) – The time it takes for data to travel between your device and the server (lower is better).
Step 3: Record Your Results
- Take a screenshot of your speed test results, including download speed, upload speed, and ping.
- Note whether you conducted the test on Wi-Fi or a wired connection. If on Wi-Fi, specify if you were near the router or farther away.
- If reporting an issue to IT support or your internet provider, provide:
- Your speed test results.
- Any patterns (e.g., slow speeds at specific times).
- Whether the issue occurs on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections.
Collecting and sharing this information can help diagnose and resolve connectivity problems more efficiently.
Note: Zoom's recommended speeds for optimal performance are 20 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload for Video calls.
