Purchasing Technical Hardware: Effective Practices

Submit the Software/Hardware Request form if you need equipment for your program.

In extenuating circumstances, if you cannot wait and need equipment sooner rather than later, consider the following before purchasing. It is not recommended that this become an ongoing practice:

  • When purchasing technical equipment for your department, think beyond the initial cost.

  • Consider warranties or protection plans, compatibility with existing technology, accessories, and software, ongoing maintenance, secure storage, and eventual replacement.

  • Keep receipts, serial numbers, and warranty information for future reference.

For significant or specialized purchases, consult IT before making a purchase to help ensure the equipment can be effectively supported.
